Discover Thai '99 Ii Restaurant & Bar

Walking into Thai '99 Ii Restaurant & Bar feels a bit like stepping off Gardens Boulevard and into a cozy corner of Bangkok. I still remember my first visit after a long weekday shift, hungry and curious, pulling into the plaza at 915 Gardens Blvd, Charlottesville, VA 22901, United States. The smell of lemongrass and garlic hit before I even reached the door, and that’s usually a good sign. Over time, I’ve been back more times than I can count, sometimes for a quick lunch, sometimes for a relaxed dinner with friends, and the experience has stayed remarkably consistent.

The menu is broad without being overwhelming, which says a lot about how carefully it’s been built. You’ll find familiar Thai staples like pad thai, green curry, and drunken noodles, but also less common dishes that reward a bit of exploration. One night, a server recommended the chef’s special basil stir-fry, explaining how the sauce is prepared in-house using fresh Thai basil and chili paste adjusted daily. That kind of detail matters, and you can taste it. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, diners are more likely to return to restaurants that offer both consistency and small seasonal variations, and this place manages that balance well.

Spice levels are handled thoughtfully. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, the kitchen asks how hot you want your dish, and they actually listen. As someone who enjoys heat but still wants flavor, I usually go for medium-plus. The chilies come through clean and sharp without drowning out the coconut milk or herbs. A friend of mine, who studies food science at UVA, once pointed out how proper chili integration enhances aroma perception, not just heat, and Thai ’99 II seems to understand that instinctively.

The bar side of the restaurant adds another layer to the experience. Thai-inspired cocktails sit alongside familiar classics, making it a comfortable spot whether you’re adventurous or not. During one visit, I watched a bartender explain the balance of sweet, sour, and herbal notes in a drink made with kaffir lime leaves. That kind of casual knowledge-sharing builds trust, and it shows the staff actually understands what they’re serving.

Reviews around Charlottesville often highlight the friendly service, and that matches my experience. Orders come out accurately, special requests are handled without fuss, and there’s an easygoing rhythm to the dining room. A 2023 study published by Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration emphasized that perceived authenticity and staff engagement are key drivers of customer satisfaction in ethnic restaurants, and both are strong here.

Location-wise, being on Gardens Blvd makes it accessible without the downtown parking stress. It’s a convenient stop for locals and visitors alike, especially those staying nearby or heading toward Route 29. While the décor isn’t flashy, it’s clean, warm, and comfortable, which fits the diner-style Thai restaurant vibe perfectly.

No place is flawless, and on especially busy nights, there can be a short wait for food. That said, the quality has always justified the time, and I’ve never felt rushed out of my seat. The kitchen seems to prioritize getting dishes right rather than fast, which is a tradeoff many regulars appreciate.

For anyone browsing menus, scanning reviews, or looking for dependable Thai food in Charlottesville, this restaurant earns its reputation through steady execution, knowledgeable staff, and food that respects tradition while staying approachable. It’s the kind of spot you recommend confidently because you know what people will get when they walk through the door.

  • I have been ordering takeout here for a while now and am always happy with my pad Thai and Thai tea. Hostess are always nice! Love their spices and hot sauces as well.

  • The food was excellent, really delicious, although the place is very small and the tables are tiny. Next time, I’d request one or two tables pushed together, because for three people the small four-person benches are a bit cramped. The space is really tiny, but the quality of the food makes it totally worth it

  • Pad Kraprow (Kapow, Grapow, depending on the restaurant) is probably my favorite Asian dish ever. This place serves the best I've ever had. I lived in Cville twenty years ago, and the original Thai '99 was fantastic, but this is better. There's a hint of...tartness, I guess? that makes me think they add just a bit of vinegar to the sauce. Amazing. And I like the ambience well enough. The bolts of fabric on shelves above the bar are a really inventive choice. I'm coming back a few months after posting. Over visited Thai '99 a number of times over the last month, and everything I've tried has been fantastic. But tonight, they were terribly slow, and I worry for them. Wake up, Cville, and visit before you lose a great restaurant.

  • Decent Thai restaurant with good service. Thai 99 duck was a little on the sweet side but the duck was cooked perfectly. Everything was good and the atmosphere is nice, just not amazing.

  • The food was pretty good. Red tgai curry was tasty. Chicjen was slightly fry and they could have added some more pineapple to the fried rice. But will definitely recommend. Their shrimp in blanket is very good.

  • Great service, good food. My family and I had an enjoyable meal at the Thai '99 restaurant while Christmas shopping. This was one of my kids first experiences at a Thai restaurant where they ordered something more than chicken satays or basic appetizers to munch. I love Drunken Noodles and they tasted just fine but the heat wasn't there and I asked for hot...might need to risk it and go for Thai hot next time. My wife order either the Crispy Duck or the Thai '99 Duck...whichever one it was, it was awesome. Super tasty and crispy with a wonderful sauce. My daughter went for some basic Egg Noodles, which suited her just fine. My son went for the Shrimp Mango but was disappointed but it really is his misunderstanding of to expect...he loves shrimp and mango but did not understand how it would get mixed together in a dish. I tasted it and it was just fine but definitely a bit on the sweeter side and I prefer the heat. The service was great and the atmosphere was nice.

  • Stopped here for lunch with my daughter. Drunken noodles and the panang curry had the right flavors. Satay and peanut sauce hit the mark as appetizers. Also ordered mango sticky rice for dessert. Rice was actually chewy, as you'd see in Thailand and other Asian countries. Worth the drive.
